Director's Message
Rhonda Norris | rhonda.norris@aas.ru
What a gorgeous morning today, I do hope your family had opportunities in recent weeks and months to spend quality time together during what I know has been a time of uncertainty and stress.
I wanted to share that there are some new staff members who have not yet arrived in Moscow. While this is not ideal, this is not unique to this school year as AAS, like others in Moscow, experiences visa delays. These delayed educators have been engaged in Distance Learning and they will continue to be engaged in Hybrid Learning with an on campus co-teacher. AAS will update parents when we know more about their arrival dates.
I wanted to highlight a few items as we make final preparations for the start of Hybrid Learning next week:
-
You will receive a “Daily Pass” template document from the school shortly. You will need to print and complete this document each day for each child. Please ensure that you are sending each child to school with their printed and completed Daily Pass. This document will be required to access the school building.
-
Please remember that your child must arrive on campus wearing his/her mask as well as have a back-up mask for use on campus.
-
Please see the AAS campus safety video showing the modifications to our campus and the additional protocols required for having students on campus. Please review this video with your children so that they are aware and understand the new safety protocols.
-
In addition to the safety video, parents can also review the Social Distancing Safety Protocols for more specific details.
-
Please carefully review the Division sections of the newsletter below for additional information specific to your child’s division.
As we communicate these latest details on campus preparedness, AAS would like to also share that Dr. Daniel J. Hohman, NASA’s Aerospace Medicine Specialist, toured our campus on August 30 to provide an expert perspective on campus safety given the pandemic. Dr. Hohman was the Director of Public Health for the Pacific Region throughout H1N1 pandemic and shared the following general feedback about the AAS campus:
“The depth of thought and preparation, the instituted policies and the physical safeguards are beyond my expectations.”
“You’ve all done an incredible job and the level of comfort all should have in terms of transmissibility of ANY pathogen is, truly, palpable. I’ve not felt that “safe” in a public space in a long time.”
I will be sharing more information from Dr. Hohman’s visit at tomorrow’s Director’s Community Connection. Please CLICK HERE to join us tomorrow from 3:30pm to 4:30 pm Moscow time. The event password will be 2020.
There has been much conversation in education since March on the fact that on-campus PK through Grade 12 schools are not designed for delivery of learning digitally. This is true at AAS as well. Our school is not permanently changing our learning model to a fully-digital learning environment, but rather our educators are adapting to meet our current circumstances through a hybrid approach that maximizes on-campus face-to-face learning as much as possible, complimented with real-time or video-delayed digital learning.
While access and integration of technology is a part of full on-campus learning, AAS strives to ensure technology enhances and benefits the learning process in all learning models. AAS has deliberately chosen the term “distance learning”, rather than technology-specific labels such as “digital” or “virtual learning”. This choice reflects our belief that quality learning occurs inside and outside of the classroom and it is not the sole use of the technology that is the focus. The technology, both software and hardware, are a part of Hybrid and Distance Learning and will continue to evolve in relation to implementation and application. However, what we have in place now or next week will be evaluated with appropriate adjustments made with a focused goal to ensure the technology is benefiting student learning.
As we continue to monitor and connect with resources around the world to ensure we are prepared, AAS leadership is aware that some schools that have opened with students on campus, have been challenged with the need to close due to positive COVID cases. AAS understands this situation is likely and we want to reassure our community that we are prepared to transition to Distance Learning when there is a positive case on the AAS campus. However, please know that this move to Distance Learning is to provide the appropriate time to confirm the potential risk of exposure to each individual student and staff member from the identified positive case. We will make decisions about how quickly we can reopen with part or all of our students and staff depending upon the circumstances of the situation. Please see the COVID Response Flowchart for details for individual students and staff members.
AAS appreciates your commitment to create the optimal learning space for your child at home allowing him/her to engage with the teacher and other classmates as independently as possible during the Hybrid Learning model. This model is a collaborative approach requiring confidentiality and discretion given the digital access to classroom learning by parents for all students, not just their own child. We recognize the significance of providing digital access to ensure maximized learning for each child based on our current restrictions on campus. Therefore, thank you in advance for ensuring information gained from these sessions whether verbal, in writing, or through video is kept confidential and not shared, recorded, or otherwise distributed. We are grateful for your partnership and collaboration as it is integral to making each of the learning models succeed.
AAS leadership and staff are engaged in ongoing learning to ensure we are current and prepared for evolving learning needs. We also welcome constructive feedback on how both Distance and Hybrid Learning are going for your children. Please be on the lookout for these feedback opportunities soon from the Divisional offices.
As we transition in learning, I want to express my sincere appreciation for your confidence and patience as well as your ongoing commitment to the AAS school community.
Warm regards,
Warm regards,
Rhonda Norris

Dear ES Families,
Thank you again so much for partnering with us in learning. We appreciate your support. Without you, working alongside your children at home, we would not have been able to begin to provide guidance for learning from a distance, create a culture of classroom learners, foster classroom communities, know your child as an individual learner, develop common classroom agreements and introduce the curriculum.
Learning Celebrations
Depending on the grade level and focus area of each classroom, we've seen:
-
One-on-one conversations with parents that have already allowed us to engage in thoughtful, detailed insights into your children as learners, while seeing what elements of their home life contribute to their perspectives
-
Families that have set up protected learning spots in their house for their children, where students can decorate these spaces with objects that are important to them, and also have all their learning materials available
-
Students that are stopping by teachers' Webex meetings during snack to listen to a story while being with their new friends
-
Students who are learning different hand and face gestures to demonstrate their understanding and in order to communicate and share their opinions
-
Students who are able to share their own knowledge of technology to offer suggestions on how to use these tools creatively
-
Teachers who have transformed their home walls with posters and created learning boards to help engage students
-
Teachers who have been able to meet individually with students to gauge their reading inflection and comprehension in order to understand how to best meet their needs moving forward
-
Students who are learning the different features of Seesaw and Google Classroom, so they're already able to effectively share resources and assignments with their class and teacher
-
In break-out sessions, students who have been able to develop and receive feedback from IAs and offer suggestions to peers
Uniforms
In our current learning environment, you might have questions about uniform expectations. The PTO shop sells components of our ES uniforms and does plan to set up some tents to sell them in the coming days. However, we understand that for some, it may be difficult to purchase what is needed in our current situation. For those of you that are not able to purchase uniforms, please ensure that your child wears similar suitable attire. While learning from home, students may, but do not need to wear their uniform and should be wearing similar attire. This is to create a connection between learning environments, either at home or at school. Pajamas are not suitable attire.
Hybrid Learning/ES Virtual Parent Coffee
The ES hosted a Virtual Parent Coffee today at 5:00 pm, if you missed this call, you can watch the video recording HERE. The password for this video recording is 7McFGEJm. We will quickly go over our Hybrid Learning Pathway presentation, and then parents will be able to ask questions about Hybrid Learning. Our first day of Hybrid Learning is planned for Tuesday, September 8. We welcome all students in Huddle A to campus on this day. Since many new routines need to be learned with social distancing and other safety procedures, educators will be working mostly with these students on campus. Those in Huddle B at home will continue to learn through asynchronous independent learning activities. Then on Wednesday, the Huddles will switch. We are really excited to see our students on campus soon! More information about Distance and Hybrid Learning can be found at https://www.aas.ru/distance-learning, including Detailed Hybrid Learning Plans.
Prekindergarten and Kindergarten
We believe that learning is social, and for our youngest learners, the ideal situation is to have them on campus each day instead of needing to engage through Distance Learning from home. Class numbers and room sizes allow us to welcome all PK and K students every day safely. These students will not be in a Huddle and will attend learning on campus every day.
Masks
We are requiring all students from PK to Grade 12 to wear a mask throughout the day. This is a slight change from previously shared information. These should be child-sized so that they fit correctly. Each student should bring a minimum of two clean masks with them to school.
Wednesday Late Starts
We will not have a late start next Wednesday, September 9 but will return to Wednesday late starts later in September.

As mentioned in the presentation, advisory is a key component of how the MS supports your child’s social and emotional learning. To help us work towards this important life goal, advisors rely frequently on a research-based learning program called Second Step® Middle School. Comprehensive in nature and developmentally appropriate for each grade level, Second Step is designed to improve students’ social-emotional skills, such as emotion management, impulse control, problem solving, and empathy, skills that are important both in and outside of the classroom.
Unit themes include:
-
Mindsets and Goals: Helping students develop a growth mindset and resilience, as well as in making plans for their own success.
-
Recognizing Bullying and Harassment: In addition to learning how to recognize these, students will learn strategies to help them safely stand up safely to bullying, and to respond appropriately to harassment.
-
Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn how to recognize strong emotions and unhelpful thoughts, and to apply strategies to manage their feelings and reduce stress.
-
Managing Relationships and Social Conflict: Students learn strategies for developing and maintaining healthy relationships, perspective-taking, and dealing with conflict.

IB Office
Sean Sonderman sean.sonderman@aas.ru
Grade 11 and 12
The IB Coordinator is sending out an electronic copy of the IB Due Dates Calendar for both cohorts for the 2020-2021 school year this week. This document should be used to help your child maintain an organized schedule in what is a very busy two years. You will notice that April, May and June of Grade 11 year and August-November of Grade 12 are periods of a high volume of work and due dates. Please note, on the document, Grade 11 work is marked as (Grade 11). All other due dates are for Grade 12s. Also, note that it is a living document. With changes the IB has recently made, some of the dates may change in the short term.
Welcome to IB
Mr. Sonderman welcomed the Grade 12s and 11s to IB year’s 2 and 1 respectively in formal presentations over the past week.. Parent presentations geared towards the unique paths of each grade will follow this week in presentations in conjunction with the high school. We want to assure that both parents and students are well informed concerning the requirements of this sometimes complex program.
Grade 11 & 12 Kognity Accounts
AAS subscribes to an IB online textbook and revision education vendor. Students receive online accounts as a part of their IB experience at AAS. Mr. Sonderman has set the accounts up based on choices students made on their Grade 11 Course Selection Forms. If a students changes a course or level , e.g. Chemistry SL to HL, then they should contact Kognity directly at support@kognity.com to request the change. This is the most efficient and quickest route to assuring uninterrupted service.
Grade 12
Grade 12 Extended Essays, the 4,000-word culmination of a major research topic of a student’s choosing has an important deadline approaching. On September 14, the first full draft of the EE is due. This will be the only full draft in which a Supervisor can provide extensive written feedback. Therefore, it is important that students provide as complete a draft as possible. The Supervisors will return the drafts by October 6 so that students will have time to complete edits and formal presentations of the papers by the November 6th Final EE deadline.
Best,
Sean Sonderman
HS Counselors
Your HS counselors have been busy this week following up with students on schedule changes and meeting with Gr 12 students about their uni plans in preparation for fall applications. We also held an assembly with Grade 12 students to review the application processes for different countries and our school procedures. You can watch the recording of our presentation here.
SENIOR PARENTS: Know that you are an important part of your child's learning and university process - please feel free to be a part of our meetings and to be in touch with any questions regarding this process. Our University Counseling page on the AAS website is a WEALTH of information and resources and it is updated frequently. Here is a video tour of the page as well as the direct link.
As we all begin to navigate and move towards a "new normal" this article might provide some guidance and also some reassurance that this is an adjustment period for everyone throughout the world and an important key is patience not only with each other but also with ourselves. We hope you find it helpful and reassuring.
