ESOL Resources for Parents and Students

Dear Parents of English Language Learners,

We in the English for Speakers of Other Languages Department (ESOL) would like to provide you with the latest information, research and strategies which are relevant to our work with your children. Please check the AAS Dispatch, division newsletters and your child's front loading assignments for any upcoming parent workshops and forums that are offered by our department. We strongly encourage you to attend these events when they are offered!

In addition to these events, feel free to use the online resources listed below. Please take a moment to explore which of these are most suitable for your child's level. If you need some assistance, we will gladly help you! Feel free to contact the ESOL specialist with whom your child works or contact the Pupil Support Services Coordinator.

Suggestions for Parents

Here are 10 suggestions for parents to help their ESOL students:

1. Find some time every day to listen and talk with your child about his or her school day in your home language.
2. Read to your child in your native (home) language.
3. Explain challenging concepts to your child in your native language.
4. Provide your child with videos, tapes, and CDs of stories in English. If possible, have versions of these in both English and your child's home language.
5. Provide your child with a dual language dictionary or picture dictionary to use at school as well as at home.
6. Encourage your child to watch some television programs in English that are of educational value.
7. Provide an authentic purpose for learning English such as asking where to find something at the grocery store or ordering at a restaurant.
8. Allow your child to teach you English.
9. Talk about English language books in your home language.
10. Praise your child's attempt to speak in English and do not worry if the child makes mistakes. Focus on building confidence and communicating meaning.
