Many students find middle school and the first year of high school difficult transition periods academically. So, the counselors work with teachers, students, and parents to help those who need extra support in this area, exploring new organizational and study skills which help even the most successful students improve. Examples of extra support include each of the following:
- Methods to help student focus
- Note-taking and study skills
- Organizational and planning skills
- Academic goal setting
More specifically in grades in 8 and 9, the counselor helps students begin personal exploration that will eventually lead to high school course choices. Personality and career surveys are used during advisory periods to help students discover more about themselves and their learning styles.
