Our counselors assist students with their transition into, through, and out of Middle School including adjustment to Moscow and the AAS community. We also help our students think through their ideas and find paths forward. Some examples of our responsibilities include the following:
- Facilitate problem solving and communication among all members of the school community, including students, teachers, parents, and administrators.
- Support students and families with immediate social-emotional challenges.
- Make referrals to outside support services where necessary. For a list of outside resources, please click here.
In addition, since most people feel more comfortable discussing things with people they know, the Grades 6-9 counselors interact with students in many settings. In addition to chats in the lunch room, the hallway, and occasionally some classes and advisories, the Grades 6-9 counselors meet with every student individually at least once each year for 15 minute chat sessions as well as in four small group meetings in Grades 6-8. Not only do these meetings offer opportunities for students to discuss age-specific topics of interest, they increase the likelihood that students will utilize counselor support if challenging times are encountered.
