Welcome to the AAS-SP Mother Language Program

"The research is very clear about the importance of bilingual children's mother tongue for their overall personal and educational development... Children's knowledge and skills transfer across languages from the mother tongue they learned in the home to the school language." - Dr. Jim Cummins, professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education

The goal of the Mother Language program is for students to become communicatively competent in the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in their mother tongue. This program encourages parents to participate in their children's academic program through home activities and classroom involvement.

The Mother Language program at AAS-SP is an extracurricular program that offers mother tongue classes taught by native speaking language instructors. Classes are initiated and organized by parents. The school assists in raising interest, finding native speaking teachers, providing space and instructional supplies for classes, and advising on the curriculum (if needed).

Mother Language program classes are offered under the AAS-SP umbrella during after-school hours. Classes are scheduled in accordance with the AAS-SP school year calendar. The prescribed length of classes is 1 hour.
