These programs are designed to help the AAS community feel safer in and around water.
- All programs follow the American Red Cross curriculum. All Swimming Instructors (WSIs) and Lifeguards are American Red Cross trained and certified.
- Our goal is to provide a safe, challenging and fun environment that helps to improve aquatic skills while inspiring a lifelong love of aquatics.
The cost of each program is either $65 for 4 Saturdays or $80 for 5 Saturdays. Classes are 45 minutes long. Credit card payment is available online, and cash payments can be made at the AAS cashier’s desk. Unfortunately there is no refund for missing classes as we pay lifeguards and instructors to accommodate full classes.
The Saturday (Learn to) Swim Program is offered throughout the year in between school holidays. Classes are offered when enough instructors are available to teach. This program is advertised via the school newsletter, and access to this program is restricted to the AAS community including SportsZone members.
Each swimmer is grouped according to his or her swimming ability. Swim level advancement can be made at any time during a lesson. Swimmers will advance to the next level when he or she meets the criteria of his or her current level, and this is determined by the swim instructor.
Parent and Child Aquatics
This class is designed for a baby and a parent to explore the water together with other families. Children should be between 6 months and 3 years old. Parents should be prepared to be in the water holding and supporting their child throughout the lesson. An instructor will lead the class through some skills, games and songs with the hopes that the children become more comfortable in the water. Swim diapers available upon request.
Level 1 swimmers are usually 3 - 6 years old but not always. This class is primarily taught in the shallow pool with a water depth of 70cm. Level 1 swimmers are typically scared of the water and focus on basic personal water safety information and skills, to help participants feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. In Level 1, participants learn beginner aquatic skills such as bubbles, bobs, gliding, floating and kicking. Students also learn to float on the stomach and back while recovering to a vertical position. At this level, participants start developing positive attitudes, good swimming habits and safe practices in and around the water.
The objective of Level 2 is to give participants success with fundamental aquatic skills. This class is taught in the shallow water opposite the starting blocks using platforms so participants can stand up in water that is 1.2 meters deep. Participants learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Participants further develop simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back that lay the foundation for future strokes. As in all levels, participants learn additional safety skills and improve comprehension of previous knowledge.
The objective of Level 3 is to build on previously learned skills by providing additional guided practice. This class is taught in deep water with platforms for support. Participants learn to survival float and swim the freestyle, backstroke and elementary backstroke. In addition, participants are introduced to the scissors and dolphin kicks, and build on the fundamentals of treading water. Participants also learn rules for diving and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from a seated or kneeling position at poolside.
Swim Team Readiness
The objective of this class is to teach and perfect the four competitive strokes. Racing turns will also be taught and/or fine-tuned. Participants will swim about 500 - 1000 meters during this session, and the classes can be customized to meet the participants' individual goals in the water. This class approximates the Red Cross Level 4 - 6 program.
Adult Fitness Swimming
The objective of this class is to provide an aerobic swimming workout for adults. The instructor will provide a workout plan, and this can be customized to meet the individual goals of each participant.
